Historic storage facilities in Hampi

The ancient granaries of Hampi will truly add amazement to your adventure. These structures stand as testaments of architectural brilliance from a bygone era and have become iconic landmarks in the region. Carved from stone, these ruins that were once multi-storied granaries played an essential part in the Vijayanagara Empire's economic activity. These served as storage and distribution hubs for grains. Some were believed to be associated with the temples while others were said to have been used for general purposes.

The tales of the mega empire

The Granaries are an ode to the grandeur and wealth of the Vijayanagara Empire. Constructed during the 15th century, the granaries in Hampi were a common feature and were built with large stones, which was the norm during ancient times.

These granaries were colossal and were mostly of circular or cubical shape. They were an important part of Hampi's town planning. However, they are no longer intact and have been destroyed along with other structures and monuments in Hampi, but the remnants of these granaries can still be seen.

Fascinatingly, Bollywood movies like Rowdy Rathore have taken advantage of Hampi's cultural significance by filming scenes there.
