Discovering the divine

The Badavilinga Temple awes visitors with its grand monolithic granite Shiva lingam (a stone symbol of Lord Shiva). Reaching a staggering 3 meters in height, it holds the title of Hampi's largest lingam.

Located near the Lakshmi Narasimha statue, the Badavilinga resides within a small stone chamber. While the chamber itself lacks a ceiling, a single opening allows natural light to reveal the lingam in a luminous glow throughout the day. This unique design adds to the temple's glory and creates an unforgettable sight.

Unveiling the legends

Badavilinga is a fusion of two words - "Badva" for poor and "Linga," representing Lord Shiva. Legend says that the Shivalinga inside the Badavilinga Temple was commissioned by a poor peasant woman living near the Virupaksha Temple at the Hampi site. A heritage monument recognised worldwide, the temple is a symbol of spiritual and religious significance for Hindus worldwide. As the holy site boasts of one of the oldest standing Shivalinga in existence, Hampi draws thousands of visitors annually seeking its blessings.

A sacred symbol. An architectural marvel.

The history of Badavilinga Temple extends far beyond its sacred significance. According to Hindu lore, when the mighty river Ganga descended upon Earth, Lord Shiva, the embodiment of creation and destruction, gentled its descent through his matted locks. This sacred connection is said to be manifested in the Badavilinga itself. Its base is believed to be submerged in water, symbolising the arrival of the Ganges and its flow forever controlled by Lord Shiva.

Keeping watch at the towering linga, you'll notice the three distinct eyes engraved on its surface. Shaped from a single block of granite, this carving represents the all-seeing wisdom of Lord Shiva. Standing tall for centuries, the temple is believed to have existed since the era of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. Devotees from all corners assemble here to offer their prayers and seek blessings.
