A Testament of Time
The Hebich Memorial Church history is a living legend of the relentless works of the Reverend J. G. Hebich and the members of the Basel Mission who worked with all their hearts to spread the word of Christianity in Karnataka and thereby establish a solid foundation for the church. The Reverend J.G. Hebich from Switzerland, a trailblazing missionary sent to Dharwad in the nineteenth century with a dream of transforming the area by bringing hope and salvation to the people of the region. Several misfortunes and problems awaited Hebich, like cultural barrier and language difference, but he pursued his cause sturdily, so he was able to put down roots among the people of the neighborhood and to develop human relations and made them to see him as a true man.
1845 marked the beginning of the Basel Mission activities in Dharwad. This, in turn, led to the construction of the Hebich Memorial Church. The church was erected in fond remembrance of the Reverend J. G. Hebich, who departed this earth in 1857, being grateful for his unwavering spirit of Christianity and diligent service to the community of Karnataka. The church has been symbolizing hope and inspiration for both worshippers and visitors for years now thus serving as a survivor of the faith and the testimony of the lasting legacy of Reverend J.G. Hebich and the Basel Mission.
Grace in Stone
The Hebich Memorial Church is widely known and for the exquisite architectural style combining the Gothic and Romanesque with an indigenous touch. The church's architecture has exterior carvings and intricate detailing which are much like medieval European cathedrals. The beauty of the church's soaring spires, arched windows, and majestic interiors is reminiscent of awe and grandeur. Within the church the sanctuary is embellished with stained glass windows, the depictions of the biblical events and motifs related to religion, which render the interiors in a mosaic of evasive color hues when illuminated by the sun.
