A journey through time

Bhalki, located just a short drive from Bidar, draws tourists with its charming historical appeal. At its core lies Bhalki Fort - an architectural masterpiece created from black stone from this region's quarries - an architectural wonder which traces back five acres and rises up seven metres in height. Once used by Maratha soldiers as armoury storage during British colonial rule, its possession later passed to Nizam of Hyderabad who used it during British occupation of Hyderabad; as you step foot onto its ancient grounds you are ready for an enriching journey back through time!

A glimpse into history

Bhalki Fort provides an incredible glimpse into history. Built of local black stone and lime mortar, its walls have partially weathered with time but remain proud today. Furthermore, its charming ambience is enhanced by traces of past walls still scattered about - they serve as poignant reminders that add an air of agelessness to this magnificent structure.

Within its expansive expanse, you'll discover two important temples: Kumbheshwar Temple is located within its grounds while Bhalkeshwar Temple can be found a short distance away. To one side of the fort's walls lies a stepwell while to its opposite a narrow passage leads to a picturesque courtyard in the north. At its northernmost point stands a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha as proof of its rich spiritual tradition.

Legends and folklore

Legend has it that Bhalki Fort, commonly referred to as 'Gadi,' which comes from Marathi for fortress, played an essential part during India's 1857 War of Independence. According to legend, King Jang Bahadur led an uprising against British oppression from within its walls - rallying 1500 soldiers around himself!
