From modest accomplishments to a heroic life
Tipu Sultan, who was given his name as Sultan Fateh Ali Sahab Tipu at birth and was born on 20th October, 1751, at Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, was set to be a mighty king. The famous military general and the successor of Hyder Ali, who was the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore. Tipu Sultan was not only his father's successor but the one who inherited his military skill and the other unbreakable qualities of the character.
Through the legend of Devanahalli which lies at about distance of 40 kilometers from Bengaluru, we have got a glimpse of this mighty ruler. The exact spot is marked with a plaque symbolising the place where the future Sultan was born, who would later revolution against English colonialists and become a symbol of courage and resistance.
A glimpse of the past
The 15th-century Devanahalli Fort, which served as a witness to the glory of the clan of the warlord of this area, Mallabairegowda, is a testimony to the strategic significance and rich cultural heritage of this region. However, when Tipu Sultan was born, the fort was constructed. Nevertheless, it was of great importance to him during his rule. This powerful fortress, with its towering walls and bastions, provides a peek into the Byzantine architectural capabilities of the period.
The layout of the fort includes twelve semicircular bastions and a sequence of arched doorways separated by carved decorations typical of the period in architectural style. Within the limits of the fort, the visitors can have a walk through the different structures, which include temples and houses, to click pictures, which will certainly bring to light the period and times when Tipu Sultan spent his early days.
