Mythology meets architecture
As you step into the temple premises, you are greeted by an impressive entrance gate flanked by intricately carved pillars. The main mantapa boasts an awe-inspiring array of 48 ornate pillars, each a masterpiece of stonework. The temple walls and ceilings are adorned with exquisite sculptures and friezes, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, such as the depiction of Ravana lifting Mount Kailash, Durga's victory over the Mahishashura demon and the divine marriage of Shiva and Parvati (Girija Kalyana). One of the temple's most remarkable features is the 1200-year-old Kalyani tank, an ancient reservoir unearthed through excavations, bearing testament to the site's profound historical and spiritual significance.
Legends of the sacred temple
The temple's origin is shrouded in fascinating legends. One tale speaks of Kempe Gowda being guided by Someshwara in a dream to build the temple using hidden treasure, promising divine protection in return. Another version involves King Jayappa Gowda, who discovered a sacred Shiva linga during a hunting expedition, prompting the construction of wooden temples on the site.
