Poetry in stone

Tucked within the formidable ramparts of Belagavi's iconic fort lies a centuries-old architectural jewel - the famed ancient Kamal Basti Jain temple. The sacred shrine’s strategic location inside the historic Belagavi Fort adds to its mystique. As you wind your way through the fort's imposing gateways and bastions, you will find this religious marvel tucked away, almost as if guarding ancient secrets. The fort's military grandeur and the temple's sacred serenity creates a captivating contrast.

‘Kamal Basadi’ now known as Kamal Basti, is a magnificent Jain Temple built in 1204 AD by Birchiraja, also called Jaya Raya, a minister in the court of Kartavirya IV of Ratta dynasty under the guidance of Jain monk Subhachandrabhattarakadeva.

The name Kamal Basti is derived from the lotus carvings extending downwards from the centre of the dome. The lotus has 72 petals believed to represent the 24 Jain tirthankaras of the past, present and future. The temple walls are sculpted with intricate designs, borders and figureheads. The stone pillars are carved beautifully with images of Jain gods on them. The idol of Lord Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara of the Jain faith, is placed in the Garbhagriha of the temple. Other notable works include a stone carving of the Sinhasan of Lord Neminath, idols of lord Sumatinath in a standing position and of Lord Adinath in padmasana position. Another example of remarkable craftmanship is the idol of Lord Parsvanath under the shade of the seven hooded Nagraj. What sets the Kamal Basti temple apart is the harmonious confluence of Hindu and Jain architectural styles. The temple's shikhara bears the imprint of the nagara style typical of North Indian temples, while the pillared halls and carved ceilings showcase the exquisite handiwork of local Chalukya artisans.

The captivating craftsmanship of Kamal Basti

As you explore the temple's nooks and crannies, you'll find yourself transported to a bygone world. Beautifully preserved frescoes and murals depict stories from Jain mythology, while inscriptions in ancient scripts like Kannada and Sanskrit indicate the temple's rich history and spiritual significance.

For those interested in architecture and history, the Kamal Basti temple is a veritable treasure trove. But even for the casual visitor, the sheer artistry and atmosphere of this ancient shrine leave an indelible impression. As you soak in its tranquillity you can't help but marvel at the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the architects and artisans who created this enduring masterpiece over a millennium ago.
