A monument filled with Badami’s history

Welcome to Badami, a town in Karnataka, brimming with history, culture, and art treasures. Step into the Archaeological Museum, first set up in the year 1979 to store and preserve the explored sculptures and inscriptions; then established in 1982 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as a museum. The museum displays a rare collection of local sculptures such as the Lajja-Gauri images of the fertility cult and pre-historic inscriptions from 6th to 16th century. This museum has a vast collection of artefacts unearthed from temples and monuments scattered across Badami's countryside. Walk through well-planned galleries, meticulously curated to take you to a bygone era. You must see its remarkable collection of ancient Indian coins. As you explore these carefully preserved artefacts, you'll be amazed by the delicate workmanship of each period in history, exhibiting the enduring legacy of the Chalukya Dynasty.

Into the four galleries

With its four galleries and the open-air gallery surrounding it, the museum has a lot to show. The open-air gallery holds Jaina images, Nataraja, Nandi, Kirtimukha, erotic figures, and some architectural pieces. Once inside, the galleries have amazing exhibits such as the Makara Torana carvings, Siva and Vishnu representations, female divinities, and panels depicting Bhāgavata or Krishnalilā scenes. You'll also find a large, scaled model of the prehistoric cave at Shidlaphadi, trans-slides depicting pre-historic life, and a newly organised section that exhibits human evolution, pre-historic paintings, and stone implements.

The museum also has a section on conservation, excavation, epigraphy, and the newly discovered quarry site, along with iron implements, etc. You can also appreciate a rare important exhibit of the line drawings of the paintings in cave-III. Trilingual audio-video film information is also available in the museum.

Don't forget to visit the publication sales counter and the reference library, which has a good collection of books on art and architecture.

A glimpse of Badami culture

Stepping outside the museum, Badami opens up even more surprises. Its Cave Temples, dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries, cut out of the sandstone cliffs surround the town. Devoted to various Hindu deities, these rock-cut temples hold intricate carvings and sculptures depicting devotion as well as artistic skill.

While you're in the region, consider exploring some of the other amazing attractions in the area, like the Agastya Lake at the foot of the Badami hills. Banashankari Temple is a tribute to the goddess, who has been revered in this region for centuries. You can also enjoy the local cuisine; dishes like jolada rotti (sorghum flatbread), enne badnekayi (stuffed brinjal), and jowar roti (sorghum bread), which have been passed down generations.

The Archaeological Museum invites you to come and discover the multifaceted culture of Badami through its exhibits and enrich your understanding of bygone days!
