Not that long or short weekends really matter in current times but I never miss an opportunity to travel. This weekend, I and my friends decided to make the most of it by travelling to McCluskeiganj for an overnight getaway from Ranchi. I chose to go on my bicycle while my friends drove down to this beautiful little town.

McCluskiganj is a famous Anglo-Indian settlement 60 kms away from the city. You won’t find any Anglo Indians living there anymore but they left behind some beautiful bungalows, bakeries and homestays for us to experience. The place has a sense of calmness and is apt to make your creative mind alive. The town has lush green surroundings, dirt tracks and fresh air to breathe. It has lakes, rivers and beaches to be lazy at. A holy place which houses a church, temple and mosque in the same place, next to each other. A symbol of unity in disparity.

I packed my bags, had them on my bicycle and started riding just before noon. It was sunny but still not too harsh. I felt great being on my bike again with panniers. The first hour was spent escaping the city traffic but the moment I was out, I was in sheer nature. The fields had turned golden as paddies have ripen and reduced traffic made it a pleasant ride for me. However, the strong headwind made me push a bit harder.

A few miles fast forward, I reached Bijupara, a small village junction from where I had to turn right and ride another 27 kms to reach Mcluskiganj. The ride from here to the ganj was sheer magic. It had lush green forest on both sides of the road, while the occasional views of the valley and small hilltops only added more beauty to this ride. I felt like stopping several times, to click photographs and capture moments, but then a side of me continued to enjoy the ride, smelling the forest around me and feeling the cold breeze gushing through my face.

My friends crossed me with 15 kms still to go and stopped to catch up on the ride and to refuel ourselves with some beer & food. It was a fun time catching up with them but I started riding soon again. The forest only got dense and pretty as I reached closer to Mckluskiganj. I could feel the chill in the air as the trees kept the sun and warmth away. I was enjoying the music of nature, with almost no traffic and civilization around. This is when I decided to stop, soak it all in and take some photos before reaching the destination.

I reached Raja's Bungalow, our stay for the night. It was exactly what I was looking for. A small resort, with basic amenities, nestled in the middle of the forest, green lawns, cricket ground, treehouse, and foods cooked in country style. After settling in our rooms and having some food, we moved out. The time I was in a car as we drove towards Degadugi River. Rushing through time to reach there before sunset. The riverbank has a scenic backdrop of a hill, a small broken bridge and a large sandbank which makes it a perfect river beach. Visit this place for sunset or sunrise and I am sure you won't b disappointed with the views. The river, along with its banks, looks especially beautiful during the monsoons and winters.

By the time we came back to Raja's Bungalow, it was already dark and we started feeling the chill as the temperature dropped. The bonfire was ready, drinks poured, music and conversation filled in, and I had a wonderful time worth cherishing forever with my favourite bunch of people. The next morning, was just another day about being lazy, the roads and being back home.

Hope you find the blog helpful. Mcluskiganj makes a perfect place for a weekend getaway and overnight bikepacking trip.
