A bountiful dam

Massanjore Dam is situated along the Mayurakshi River in the Dumka district of Jharkhand. The dam has a height of 155 feet from the base and 2170 in length. The reservoir covers an area of 16,650 acres and holds a 500,000 acre-feet storage capacity. Canadian aid helped in the construction of the dam and that is why its inauguration was done by the Foreign Minister of Canada, Lester B. Pearson. It is also referred to as the Pearson Dam or Canada Dam.

The dam serves as a symbol of socioeconomic development and environmental stability of the entire Jharkhand state. Apart from being a tourist spot, the dam fulfils multiple purposes, be it irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water supply for both industrial and domestic areas. One of the most important functions that the dam does is the regulation of water flow in the Mayurakshi River during the monsoon season. The dam stores water during heavy rains and then does the release gradually. That is how the dam protects downstream areas and saves thousands of lives and also helps farmers cultivate crops all around the year, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity.

A place of togetherness

Massanjore Dam attracts tourists from all over the world as it is famous for its grandeur and scenic beauty. There are a lot of activities that you can do, like boating, fishing or just taking a nice walk at the corners. You can spend quality time with your family and friends and admire the scenic beauty around you. For nature lovers and travel enthusiasts, the dam offers a beautiful backdrop surrounding hills and forests. Besides these recreational activities, you can always plan a picnic with your friends and family to spend some nice time together. There are street food stalls across the dam where you can try out some snacks.

A bustling hub of culture

The dam is not just famous for its tourism and functional significance but it also holds historical and cultural importance. The construction of the dam required a lot of villages to relocate from their native place. Thus, the displaced residents have then shifted to nearby areas of the dam. So since their displacement, the dam has preserved their culture and heritage. Be it festivals, fairs or other local cultural events, everything happens in the vicinity of the Massanjore dam.
