The geographic splendour of Dassam Falls

Located near Ranchi in Jharkhand, Dassam Falls is a stunning natural attraction where the Kanchi River cascades down rugged terrain, creating a spectacular display of power and beauty. The waterfall, also known as Dassam Ghagh, plunges from a height of about 44 meters (144 feet), creating a mesmerizing sight and an invigorating roar as it hits the rocky bottom. Situated about 40 kilometres from Ranchi, the state capital, Dassam Falls is not just a tourist spot but a vibrant ecosystem supporting diverse flora and fauna.

The waterfall is essentially a Nick Point, or Knick Point, indicating that it has formed over time due to breaks in the longitudinal rocky slopes. Because of this, it is unsafe to swim or enter the water, as the current is strong and the terrain is uneven. Aside from this, the area resonates with the soothing sounds of gurgling water, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The power of sound

An intriguing aspect of Dassam Falls is the local legend that the sound of the water is so powerful, it can drown out any other sound. This has led to a local belief that one should not shout when near the falls for fear of invoking bad luck.

The name "Dassam" is derived from the Mundari word "Da Song." In Mundari, "da" refers to water, and the suffix signifies the act of pouring. This name likely originated from the natural phenomenon of water flowing from the falls. Over time, the pronunciation evolved from "Da Song" to the current name, "Dassam."

Do more at the Falls

Visitors to Dassam Falls can indulge in a variety of activities that enhance their experience of this natural wonder. The area is ideal for picnicking, with several spots around the waterfall offering perfect settings for a family outing or a relaxing day with friends. Nature walks along the trails leading to the waterfall provide opportunities to appreciate the local flora and observe wildlife in its natural habitat. For the more adventurous, exploring the nearby woods offers a chance to connect with nature and enjoy the tranquility of the forest.

The region around Dassam Falls is rich with cultural and natural sites that offer extended adventures for visitors. The nearby villages are steeped in local traditions, where one can observe the daily lives of the indigenous communities and learn about their customs and cuisine. For those interested in wildlife, the Betla National Park, which is a drive away, offers wildlife safaris where visitors can spot elephants, tigers, and other native species. Best time to visit

The best time to visit Dassam Falls is during the monsoon season, from July to September, when the rainfall increases the volume of the Kanchi River, and the waterfall is at its most majestic. The lush greenery of the monsoon season also makes the landscape particularly beautiful during this time. However, visitors should be cautious as the rocks can be slippery. For those who prefer a less crowded experience, the post-monsoon months of October and November offer an ideal time, with pleasant weather and a still-abundant water flow, providing a more serene experience at the falls.
