A zoo with a purpose

In the vibrant city of Jamshedpur lies a sprawling sanctuary spread over 62 acres, a haven for over 150 species of animals and birds from diverse regions.

Welcome to the Tata Steel Zoological Park, a beautiful sanctuary that celebrates the wonders of nature with its green canopy of bushes and trees lined along the Jayanti Sarovar Lake. Established in 1992, it was opened to the public in 1994 and was recognised as a 'Medium' classification Zoo by the CZA in 2017.

Here, you will encounter magnificent creatures such as tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, and various birds and reptiles. The zoo also demonstrates its dedication to wildlife conservation and sustainable practices through various initiatives and partnerships that promote awareness and education among its visitors.

It has even undergone significant assessments and renovations to enhance its facilities. These renovations include constructing a veterinary care facility, relocating animal enclosures, and improving boundary barricades - expected to be completed by 2025.

As the park continues to evolve, it offers an enthralling experience that combines wildlife preservation, education, and sustainable practices.

A compassionate heart for the wild

The Tata Steel Zoological Park's dedication to animal welfare transcends mere boundaries. With heartwarming tales of rescue and preservation, this zoo stands as a beacon of hope for its beloved inhabitants. It is renowned for its Bengal Tiger breeding program and has garnered praise for its pivotal role in bolstering the population of this endangered species through meticulous breeding initiatives.

In a poignant display of compassion and expertise, the park also made headlines in 2019 with the remarkable rescue and rehabilitation of a wounded elephant, seamlessly reintegrating it into its native environment after nurturing it back to health.

Yet, another impressive feat is the zoo's commitment to conserving the Olive Ridley Sea turtles, actively monitoring nesting sites, protecting fragile eggs, and raising awareness about the challenges these majestic creatures face.

Notably, the park's dedication to wildlife rehabilitation shone brightly in 2020 as it orchestrated the successful rescue and release of a felid resembling a leopard, returning it to its rightful place in the wild.

Star-studded visitors

In a testament to its noble mission and remarkable endeavours, the Tata Steel Zoological Park has welcomed many distinguished guests – from celebrities to philanthropists. Among them, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, graces the park with frequent visits alongside his family, adding his support to its cause.

Then, in 2012, Bollywood luminary and global icon Priyanka Chopra shared her enchanting experience at the park with her vast social media following, spotlighting its charm during her sojourn in Jamshedpur.

Noteworthy contributions to the park's growth have also come from esteemed figures like Anil Agarwal, visionary businessman and founder of Vedanta Resources, who magnanimously pledged Rs. 10 crores towards its advancement in 2019!
