A tale of two legends
Given their pre-eminent role in our mythology, Mansar and Surinsar lakes have sacred significance to countless devotees. Babar Vahan, son of Arjun and Ulupi, once ruled over the area these lakes are located in. Legend has it that Arjun performed the Ashwamegh Yagya after the Mahabharata war to assert dominance. However, Babar Vahan captured the horse used in the Yagya at a nearby village called Khoon and inadvertently killed Arjun in battle.
Thrilled with his victory, he presented Arjun's head to his mother, Ulupi, only to discover later that he had slain his father. Babar Vahan had to obtain a precious gem from the six-headed serpent king, Sheshnag, to bring Arjun back to life. He created a tunnel in Surinsar (then called Surangsar) and emerged at Mansar (then called Manisar) after defeating Sheshnag and acquiring the gem.
Thus, Mansar and Surinsar hold immense religious significance for Hindus. Ancient temples surround Mansar, where devotees perform rituals like the Mundan ceremony (the first tonsuring of a child's head). Besides its religious importance, Mansar is a popular tourist destination, evidenced by the boating decks and eateries lining its shores.
