A marvel of a bygone era

Ramnagar, a picturesque town nestled on the left bank of the Kud River amidst the majestic mid-Himalayan range, is a place steeped in history and intrigue. Serving as the capital of the old Bandralta State, it witnessed a transition of power under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Raja Suchet Singh. The formidable Ramnagar Fort, attributed to Raja Suchet Singh, stands as a testament to the region's rich heritage.

Legend has it that Raja Suchet Singh's wife performed sati near the fort, and today, a Samadhi of Maharani marks the site where this solemn ritual took place. The fort, boasting a unique architectural design with polygonal bastions, towering fortification walls, and captivating images of Ganesha, Durga, and Hanuman adorning its gateways, was renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1972 and is a protected monument.

Venturing inside the fort, you can explore the central courtyard with its intriguing cells and vaulted chambers, once used for storing cannonballs. The surrounding moat and the narrow bridge on the southeastern side add to the fort's charm and legend, making it a must-see destination for history enthusiasts and adventurers alike.
