Where the divine flows in the Himalayas

Uma Devi of Uma Nagri is situated in the foothills of the Himalayas  in Uttersoo town of the Anantnag district. Pulsating with the spiritual aura of Uma Devi, this isn't an ordinary temple. Here the goddess has manifested as the very essence of life - water.

A divine spring, a sacred abode

Legend whispers of Swami Shivananda, a saint who dreamt of a celestial location chosen by Uma Devi herself. Guided by this vision, he discovered a natural marvel - five springs, that convergied to form the sacred symbol 'Omkar'. This confluence, believed to represent the essence of all creation, became the foundation of the Uma Devi temple. Devotees marvel at the way two of these springs merge, symbolizing the divine union of Shiva and Shakti. It further cements the temple's association with Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. The crystal-clear water is said to be a manifestation of Uma Devi's blessings.

Brari Angan: The cat's courtyard

The name Uma Nagri itself translates to 'The Abode of Uma', but the temple complex holds another fascinating title - Brari Angan, which translates to 'The Cat's Courtyard'. Local lore tells the tale of a governor's sceptical visit. To prove the sanctity of the site, Swami Shivananda willed a stray cat to transform into a lion, showcasing the transformative power of the divine. Impressed, the governor granted the land for the temple's upkeep, forever etching the name 'Brari Angan' in its history.

A legacy of rituals and blessings

An annual Maha Yajna is held on the anniversary of Swami Shivananda, honouring his role in establishing the temple. Devotees from all walks of life flock here seeking blessings, inner peace, and the serenity that emanates from this unique confluence of nature and spirituality.

So, if you find yourself drawn to the Himalayas, seeking a pilgrimage that goes beyond the ordinary, look no further than Uma Devi of Uma Nagri. Here, amidst the whispering pines and the gurgling springs, you might just discover a divine connection, a place where the very essence of the goddess flows freely.

Best time to visit

Uma Devi Temple welcomes devotees throughout the year. Plan your visit between January to April when the winter's crisp air enhances the experience, making it the most comfortable time for exploration. This is also the time for auspicious festivals like Shivratri, Navratri, Uma Jayanti (Chaitra Shukla Paksh Navmi) and the founder's Nirwan Diwas (Pusha Shukla Paksh Pratipada), when vibrant energy pulsates as devotees gather for blessings.
