A journey through time: The legacy of Baba Dawood Khaki
Visited by Saint Shah Hamdan of Iran, this 600 years old mosque, was only a platform then. His son Mir Muhammed Hamdani completed constructing the ground floor of the mosque by 1397 A.D. The rest two floors of the mosque were built by Baba Dawood Khaki himself in 1579 A.D and 1582 A.D respectively. Sheikh Baba Dawood Khaki was a prominent Islamic scholar and spiritual figure during the Kashmir Sultanate period. As a prolific writer, Hazrat Baba Dawood Khaki, has to his credit many works of repute. These include Virdul Murideen, Dastoorul Salikeen, Qasida Jalalia, Qasida Lamhiya. His excellence in the religious scholarship may be judged from the fact that in his Virdul Murideen, he has quoted from over two hundred religious works. He was a revered Qazi of Kashmir and a dedicated follower of Hazrat Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom Sahib, a venerated spiritual figure credited with spreading Islam in the region.
