A sacred pilgrimage site

Sarahan, a hidden gem nestled in the Kinnaur Valley of Himachal Pradesh, beckons travelers with its serene beauty and spiritual significance. It is a gateway to the Kinnaur valley and further to the mighty Spiti valley. This quaint village was once the summer capital of the rulers of the Bushahr kingdom.

The village is renowned for the Bhimakali Temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhimakali, the presiding deity of the former Bushahr state. The Bhimakali Temple traces its origins back 800 years, making it a repository of centuries-old traditions and spiritual fervour. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga, affectionately known as Bhimakali by the locals.

Among the 51 sacred Shakti peethas scattered across the Indian subcontinent, the Bhimakali Temple holds a special place. Devotees believe that the temple houses a fragment of the divine feminine energy, making it a powerful pilgrimage site. The temple’s architecture is a blend of Himachali and Indo-Tibetan styles. Its intricate woodwork, adorned with mythical motifs and celestial beings, captivates visitors. The exterior, embellished with ornate carvings, reflects the devotion poured into its construction.

Miraculous tales and myths

Next to the current temple, there is an older structure with a fascinating story. During the 1905 earthquake, the ancient temple tilted slightly, seemingly defying gravity. However, in a miraculous twist of events, it straightened itself during a subsequent tremor. Legends speak of a secret tunnel connecting the temple to the nearby village of Ranwin, through which priests once entered and exited discreetly.

Two intriguing legends are intertwined with the temple’s history. According to one account, during the Daksha Yagna, a piece of Sati Devi’s ear fell at this very spot when Lord Vishnu intervened, thus making the temple a sacred site. Another legend places the temple in the realm of a demon named Banasura, a descendant of the devout King Prahlad. It is said that Lord Krishna fought against Banasura at this location. The defeated king’s head supposedly rests beneath the temple’s entry gate, which is now marked as a raised platform. In 1927, a new Bhimakali Temple replaced the old one, attracting devotees seeking blessings, solace, and divine intervention.

Protecting an endangered species

The Sarahan Pheasantry is a remarkable conservation facility dedicated to the preservation and breeding of the Western Tragopan, an endangered species of pheasant affectionately known as Jujurana and the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. The bird's striking plumage, adorned with vibrant colours, makes it a sight to behold. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and other threats, the Western Tragopan faces endangerment. The Sarahan Pheasantry is the only centre in the world where conservation breeding of the Western Tragopan takes place.
