A spiritual sanctuary amidst the hills

Close your eyes and imagine the cool embrace of the lush Himalayan forests, where sunlight dances on snow-capped peaks and cool mountain air invigorates your spirit. Here, in the charming town of Shimla, lies a hidden gem - the Sankat Mochan Temple.

As the mist swirls around the temple's Shikhara (spires), a sense of serenity washes over you, a gentle reminder that the divine often resides in the most breathtaking corners of our world. This religious place, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the embodiment of unwavering devotion, invites you to step inside and discover a haven of peace where worries melt away like snowflakes in the warm sun.

A constellation of gods and sages

Sankat Mochan Temple isn't just a shrine to one deity; it's a constellation of divine light. Here, Lord Hanuman, the powerful Monkey God revered for dispelling worries, holds court. Yet, his presence isn't solitary. Sharing the sacred space are other venerated figures: Lord Shiva, the embodiment of peace; the Navgrahas, the celestial bodies influencing our lives; and Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. A unique architectural flourish adorns this temple, drawing inspiration from South Indian design traditions.

A legacy of devotion

The temple's fascinating history is intertwined with the life of Baba Neeb Karori Ji Maharaj, a sage who is believed to have received spiritual powers from Lord Hanuman after he did penance for years in his adolescence. Also known as Neem Karoli Baba, he had influenced many international celebrities like Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Julia Roberts, who have talked about Babaji’s influence in their lives even after he had passed away.

Once Baba ji visited this place. Drawn by the area's pristine beauty and tranquil ambiance in the late 1950s, he established a simple hut here. He loved the majestic mountains, fresh breezes, and lush green valleys and decided to make a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman here. His dream found willing disciples in Raja Bajrang Bahadur Bhandari, the then Lieutenant Governor, and Shri Bhagwan Sahai, who laid the foundation stone in 1962. Consecrated in 1966, the shrine has now grown from its humble beginnings into a sprawling complex encompassing 18.8 bighas.

Enjoy a holistic experience

Sankat Mochan Temple is a go to destination, not just for spiritual seekers but also for those seeking a holistic experience. The temple complex features a langar, a community kitchen, where delicious vegetarian meal (prasad) is served every Sunday, fostering a sense of community and equality.

For those seeking a venue for auspicious occasions, the complex provides well-maintained marriage halls available at a nominal rent. Whether you choose a simple ceremony or a more elaborate one steeped in tradition, the temple's serene atmosphere provides a beautiful backdrop for your special day.

A feast for the body and soul

A visit to Sankat Mochan Temple is incomplete without indulging in the delectable prasad offered at its shop. The complex also houses an Ayurvedic dispensary for locals, where visitors can also explore natural remedies for various ailments. For a moment of quiet reflection, a dedicated children's park provides a space for families to unwind.

Celebrating faith

The temple comes alive during festivals like Dussehra and Ramnavami. On Ramnavami, special prayers and havans (fire rituals) are held, while the idol of Lord Rama is adorned with new clothes to celebrate his birthday. Dussehra witnesses the burning of effigies of the epic Ramayana's villains, King Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnath, crafted by skilled artisans from Meerut. A local Ram-Lila party, dressed as Lord Rama and Lakshmana, enacts the symbolic burning of these effigies, signifying the triumph of good over evil.

Every September, the temple transforms into a vibrant hub during the ten-day-long Vinayaka Chaturthi festival, attracting devotees and tourists from far and wide.

Sankat Mochan Temple transcends the boundaries of a place of worship. It's a sanctuary for the soul, offering a haven of peace amidst the scenic beauty of Shimla. Whether you seek spiritual solace, a glimpse into fascinating history, a delicious meal, or a space for family bonding, the temple welcomes you with open arms.
