Exploring the neoclassical masterpiece
The moment you set foot on the Ridge, the church's neoclassical grandeur fills your vision, and you can see why it is so famous.
The towering spires and the 90-foot towers command your attention, daring to pierce the heavens. Then there's the church's legendary brass bell and the story of the British soldier who tried to steal it, only to meet an untimely end after a perilous climb up a steep hill. The church's giant round clock is a sight to behold, a gift from Col. Dumbleton in 1860. The five smaller, tubular bells also add to the magic with their sonorous tones ringing out across the Ridge.
Inside, the vaulted ceilings and the stone carvings all come together to create an atmosphere of serenity. Run your fingers along the smooth wooden pews and feel the weight of history pressing against your palm. The pipe organ inside is another masterpiece, the largest in the Indian subcontinent.
As sunlight filters through the windows, it casts a spellbinding glow of various colours throughout the interior. Behind this enchanting effect are the five beautiful stained glass windows, each representing the five virtues of Christianity - faith, hope, charity, fortitude, patience and humanity. The fresco is another spectacle built by Lockwood Kipling, the father of Rudyard Kipling. You will also encounter paintings that vividly depict scenes from the life of Jesus, leaving you utterly mesmerised.
As night descends, the Christ Church completely transforms, illuminated with the gentle glow of the strategically placed lights. You will be stunned by this magical moment as the Shimla Valley, snow-capped peaks, and towering pines make the sight even more breathtaking!
A sight to behold it truly is, where Col. J.T. Boileu, a renowned architect of that time who also contributed to the repairs of several buildings, including the Taj Mahal, played a part.
