A delightful escape from the city

Just 2 kilometres from the Shimla Railway Station and approximately 5 kilometres from the iconic Ridge, Annandale is a serene haven for nature enthusiasts and history aficionados alike. This expansive meadow, adorned with lush greenery and tall pine trees, offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Annandale's rich history, intertwined with British colonial times, lends it an air of nostalgia.

In the 1830s, Annandale was a playground for British officers and their families during the British Raj. Originally known as "Company Ka Baag", it offered a delightful escape from routine life. Here, the British indulged in fancy dress shows, picnics, and birthday celebrations. The grounds echoed cultural festivals, including Gymkhana events and sports like polo and cricket. Every year, the National Championship of Polo graced this verdant expanse.

The valley’s fascinating etymology

When British officers first encountered the valley, they found it reminiscent of the Annandale valley in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Many officers hailed from Scotland’s Annandale, so they decided to name this Indian valley after its Scottish counterpart. Another tale involves Charles Pratt Kennedy, a British political agent. Impressed by the valley's beauty, he named it after his beloved back in England - "Anna".

A walk through Annandale

Annandale spans a considerable area, making it an ideal place for leisurely walks, picnics, and outdoor activities. The grounds at Annandale have witnessed various historical events, including military parades and sports tournaments. The well-maintained golf course adds to Annandale’s allure, attracting golf enthusiasts from far and wide. Visitors can stroll through the meadow and inhale the crisp mountain air while listening to the rustling leaves and chirping birds.

Golf enthusiasts can tee off at the golf course, surrounded by majestic pines, and enjoy the stunning views. Annandale’s open expanse invites leisurely picnics with family and friends. Additionally, you can immerse yourself in India’s military past by visiting the Army Heritage Museum, which sheds light on battles, heroes, and the evolution of the armed forces.

Many more interesting places to discover

After your visit to Annandale Valley, you can continue your exploration in and around Shimla city. Another attraction is the Jakhu Temple, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, where you can trek up to see the 108-foot-tall statue of Hanuman standing sentinel over Shimla. Just a short drive away, The Ridge offers stunning views, cultural events, and a chance to mingle with locals.
