A protected sanctuary

Explore the breathtaking Great Himalayan National Park (GNHP), nestled in the picturesque Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh. This UNESCO World Heritage Site spans 1,171 square kilometres, encompassing elevations ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 meters. The park is divided into four enchanting valleys—Sainj, Tirthan, Jiwa Nal, and Parvati—each offering its own unique charm and natural beauty.

Immerse yourself in the sanctuary of diverse flora and fauna, including valuable medicinal herbs, and witness the upper mountain glacial and snowmelt water sources that give life to several rivers. The park's protection of monsoon-affected forests and alpine meadows of the Himalayan front ranges adds to its allure, making it an essential part of the Himalayan biodiversity hotspot.

With 25 forest types and a rich variety of threatened fauna species, the Great Himalayan National Park stands as a testament to the remarkable significance of biodiversity conservation. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, this natural wonder is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and conservation advocates alike.

Diverse flora and fauna

As you begin exploring the park, you'll find a diverse array of plants and animals, making it a sanctuary for numerous species. The park is home to 31 mammal species and 25 threatened plant species, including several critically endangered animals like the musk deer, snow leopard, western tragopan, and Himalayan tahr. Additionally, it's a refuge for four globally endangered mammals, three endangered bird species, and several medicinal plants. With 34 out of 47 species of threatened medicinal plants in Himachal Pradesh, the park is truly a haven for nature's wonders. All the species are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.

Home to the elusive Serow

The serow is a goat-antelope that inhabits the high-altitude forests and grasslands of the Himalayas. In 2015, it was first spotted in the park, highlighting the suitability of GHNP as a habitat for this endangered species. This discovery also suggests that there may be more serows present in other areas of the park. How amazing is that?
