Unraveling the Haryanvi heritage

What means heritage in Hindi is bound to showcase the cultural, architectural, and archaeological treasure of a region! ‘Dharohar’ Museum does exactly that, offering a glimpse into the illustrious folk life of the people of Haryana through dioramas, tableaus, statues, and exhibits.

Established by Kurukshetra University on its campus during its golden jubilee year, nearly 90% of the artifacts displayed here are donated by villagers from across the state. Within the museum, you can explore 23 distinct sections and galleries, boasting a collection of over 3,000 rare and antique artifacts.

One notable gallery features a traditional Haryanvi mud kitchen with brass containers, mud pots, ceramic jars, and cane baskets. Other galleries display Haryanvi costumes, jewelry, handicrafts, farming tools, and musical instruments. There's even a section dedicated to the Indian army, honoring martyrs from the region.

Towards the museum's end lies a meticulously crafted village scene, complete with a central well where women fetch water, and villagers engage in various trades and sacred ceremonies. It also hosts performances of Haryanvi folk art, music, and dance in its open-air theater, adding a dynamic touch to the cultural experience.

Come, explore the museum as it preserves, cherishes, and inspires visitors to keep their traditions alive!

The various sections of the museum

Every section here is worth exploring. Stroll the Architectural Heritage section to witness a rich legacy in construction and architecture, evident in the abundance of ancient structures scattered across the region. Notable examples include the 700 A.D. Shiva temple of Kalayat, the 18th-century Mama-Bhanja's Sarai of Gharaunda, and the Jal Mahal (water palace) of Narnaul from 1591 A.D.

In the Archaeological Heritage section, you’ll find a 5000-year-old pitcher from Jhajjar, remnants of the Harappa civilization from Ghirai (Hisar), a throbbing stone from Kalyana (Bhiwani), and a large pot approximately 1500 years old from Mohan Bari, Distt. Jhajjar.

The War-Heroes section showcases Haryana's legacy of brave soldiers, spanning from World War I to the Kargil War, through photographs. The museum also honors the recipients of the Ashok Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and other gallantry awards.

Other sections include the University: A Glimpse of History, Freedom Fighters, Folk Musical Instruments, Wall Paintings, Manuscripts, Gher (Cattle Shed), Agriculture & Folk Festivals, Water Heritage, Hukka, Chaarpais (Cots), Domestic Articles, Art and Craft, Transportations, Professional Artifacts/Tools, Haryanvi Ornaments, Haryanvi Rasois, Folk Costumes, Theatre Chamber, Library and Research, and Raj Kishan Nain Photo Gallery.
