A war instigated by words

Sitting on the banks of the Tretara (Three Lakes) – Chattasar, Sumerasar and Chatasar, an ancient sentinel stands, providing a commanding view of Kutch’s landscapes.

Behold the Tera Fort, a historical site located near the village of Tera in southwestern Kutch, Gujarat. The fort was built by one of the Jadeja Chiefs, who received the estate of Tera during the reign of Deshalji I.

During the reign of Maharao Lakhpatji, the fort suffered significant damage during a war. Sumraji Thakore of Tera, the chief of the Tera Estate, incited a conflict by speaking poorly of the Rao of Kutch. Lakhpatji responded by sending an army to Tera, marking the first use of artillery in the history of Kutch. The famous Ram Singh Malam set up the artillery, resulting in substantial damage to the fort. After three months of siege, Sumraji surrendered and issued a formal apology for his remarks, bringing an end to the conflict.

The fort's impressive structure includes gateways, bastions, and remnants of its regal past. Additionally, the fort's walls were damaged in the 1819 Rann of Kutch earthquake but were later repaired. It's a testament to the rich history and resilience of the region.

Beyond the Fort

Tera Fort isn't the only interesting place in Kutch. From the Great Rann of Kutch to its famed Kutch Museum and Aina Mahal Palace, there is a vast range of attractions within easy reach. You can also visit The Vijay Vilas Palace in Mandvi, which is an immersive journey into the regal past of Kutch.
