Legends and lore
Ambe Dham's history is shrouded in myth and legend. According to one popular myth, its establishment can be credited to Swaminarayan, one of Hinduism's revered sages who is revered today for his oratory skills and has left an indelible mark on spiritual landscape. Born in Gujarat during the 18th century and known for creating his own denomination within Hinduism - Swaminarayan left his mark through Ambe Dham as it stands today.
Legend holds that while exploring Kutch territory, Swaminarayan encountered an enormous banyan tree. Contemplating beneath its expansive canopy, he began practising meditation. Within his meditation practice came an appearance from goddess Amba herself who wanted him to build her a temple as soon as possible; Swaminarayan followed this instruction and gave birth to Ambe Dham - our sacred place of worship today.
A miracle of faith
An inspiring legend recounts the tale of a young woman who dreamt that Amba instructed her to visit Ambe Dham Temple and retrieve water from its sacred well, carrying it back home and miraculously ending a drought that had plagued her village - providing access to potable water relief for its population.
