Where divine light illuminates your soul

The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple is situated on the coast of Saurashtra in Dwarka. The revered shrine houses one of the world's twelve Jyotirlingas (Swayambhu or self-existent Shivalingas) which are the most sacred representations of Lord Shiva and stand as a sacred symbol of devotion to the deity.

Descend into the underground sanctum of the temple where the Jyotirlinga resides, and experience the peace and energy that permeates this sacred space.

The 80-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva in a seated posture, creates a sublime ambience. With its intricate architecture and stunning sculptures, the temple offers a sanctuary for seekers of inner peace and spiritual solace. The temple boasts a rich history, with archaeological excavations suggesting the existence of five earlier cities at this remarkable site.

A sight to behold

The temple's design adheres to the principles of Vaastu Shastra and is based on the Sayanam (sleeping) posture of the human body. As you approach the 80-foot-tall statue, crafted with meticulous detail, you will be struck with awe by the mastery of ancient artisans. Their legacy is preserved in every intricate detail and the sheer scale of this monument.

The sanctum of the temple holds the divine Nageshwar Shiva Linga (a stone symbol of Shiva), sculpted from the sacred Dwarka Shila stone. This magnificent lingam is adorned with small chakras and takes the form of a Teen Mukhi Rudraksha. According to the Shiva Purana, offering prayers at this sacred lingam bestows protection from poisons, snake bites, and worldly temptations.

A tale of a demon and devotion

The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is steeped in a captivating legend that resonates with devotion and divine intervention. This is the tale of a ruthless demon named Daruka, who held a deep reverence for Lord Shiva. When a devotee named Supriya refused to teach Daruka the proper way to worship Lord Shiva, the demon inflicted torture upon her. However, Supriya's unwavering faith and chants of ‘Om Namaha Shivay’ impressed Lord Shiva, who manifested himself to slay Daruka. The lord, known as Nageshwar, chose to reside at this very place, safeguarding and bestowing blessings upon all.
