The intricate art of tie and dye
Bandhani, which derives its name from the Sanskrit word 'bandh,' meaning 'to tie,' involves creating intricate designs by tying small portions of fabric with thread before immersing it in vibrant dyes to produce stunning displays of vibrant colours and intricate motifs, often representing traditional motifs and symbols.
Rooted in tradition, Bandhani employs a palette of natural colours, with yellow, blue, green, and black taking center stage. Each colour carries its own symbolic significance. Red, for instance, symbolises good fortune for a bride, while yellow embodies the spirit of spring and joy. The fabric's designs emerge through a meticulous combination of dots, initially block-printed onto the fabric. Among the myriad of patterns, popular ones include sikharibhat (jungle scene), ambaa dal (mango orchard), and chakalipopat (sparrow, parrot), each telling a unique visual story.
It’s an art form passed down through generations in Jamnagar and its artisans are well known for their exquisite craftsmanship.
