The sacred abode of Lord Shiva

The Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple stands on a hillock jutting out into the Arabian Sea on the western edge of Dwarka. Dedicated to a form of Lord Shiva known as the Chandra-Mouliswar Shiva, this ancient sanctuary enshrines a sacred Shivalinga, which is believed to be Swayambhu or the self-manifested lingam of Lord Shiva.

It is said that over five thousand years ago, the deity revealed himself in the form of this revered Shivalinga in the sea. The temple was built at the confluence of Gomti, Ganga, and the Arabian Sea by the revered Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya.

Renowned as one of Dwarka's most iconic Shiva temples, the Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple offers you not only spiritual fervour but also an unrivalled view of Dwarka's scenic coastline due to its elevated perch.

Behold a sacred ritual performed by nature

Each year a remarkable phenomenon occurs around June or July. The Arabian Sea gently rises and envelopes the temple entirely in its embrace. For a fleeting moment, the temple becomes submerged in the sea, and it feels like the sea itself is performing the sacred Abhisheka ritual (the ceremonial pouring of water or sacred substances over a deity's statue) of the Shivalinga. The sea recedes as swiftly as it arrives, revealing the temple in its washed divine glory.

Experience divinity in nature’s embrace

The pathway leading to the temple offers picturesque views, with waves crashing on either side and a lighthouse standing tall to the left. You may also observe water swirling over the steps along the way. Experience nature's breathtaking spectacle as the tides ebb and flow, with the setting sun casting a golden glow on the temple's façade, creating an unforgettable memory. For the best experience, plan your visit around sunset and when the tide is low.
