The Green sanctuary of life

Goa is the land of the golden sun and sand. But it is also the land of wild animals, eclectic-coloured birds, flowers, and butterflies - some are common, and some are rare as precious gems. Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in the Canacona Taluka, is a piece of heaven that has embraced various species of trees, animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. Spanning over 86 square kilometres, it shelters a diverse array of flora and fauna, including rare species such as the Indian giant squirrel and a black panther.

Established in 1969, it is one of Goa's oldest sanctuaries, offering visitors a serene retreat into nature's embrace. With its dense forests, meandering trails, and tranquil water bodies, Cotigao provides a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike to immerse themselves in the beauty of Goa's natural heritage.

You can explore the sanctuary's eight nature trails, which range from 500 meters to 5 kilometres in length. Even better, you can immerse in the vibrant culture of the Velip and Kunbil tribal groups who live in and around the sanctuary. Engage with these communities to learn about their rich culture and unique way of life!

Soaring over a canopy

The main attraction of the sanctuary is the observation deck. Imagine sitting amidst a canopy of trees, looking down at the world from 25 meters high, and waiting for the wild to go about their day.

The Cotigao Sanctuary was established to protect the ecosystem of the valley. The dense green cover of trees that reach for the sky creates a green canopy, its foliage restricting sunrays from reaching the ground.

Tame, yet terrific

Cotigao may not be home to the more celebrated and glorious animals like tigers and leopards, but it is a haven for species such as the elusive flying squirrel, slender loris, and Indian pangolin. It is even visited and lived in by numerous birds, both rare and common. If you can keep your eyes peeled, you can spot fluttering delights like the Malabar trogon, white-bellied woodpecker, or even the Gazelles, Sloth Bears, Panthers, and other elusive mammals.

Nature’s knowledge centre

Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary houses the Nature Interpretation Centre. This is where you can read and learn more about the animals and the plants out in the sanctuary. But if you are the adventurous sort, you can choose any of the eight hiking trails and be on your way. The sanctuary also has something for the ones who love a sprinkle of culture and history in their trip. If you are one of them, you can immerse yourself in the lifestyle of the Velip and Kunbil tribes. Conversation with them will open your mind and broaden your understanding of the traditional ways of life.

Out and about Canacona

If you feel satiated with your visit to the sanctuary, you can explore the sweet village of Canacona. The slow Goan life, the swaying coconut trees, the colourful houses, the chapels and churches at every bend can be an invigorating experience. You can also feel the breeze on your face and the sand on your feet at the pristine beaches.

In the fading light of day, as the sounds of the forest lull into whispers, one thing becomes clear: Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, where nature thrives in harmony and secrets are whispered among ancient trees, is not just a sanctuary for wildlife but the soul.
