Witness the 100-year-old music festival!

In the ancient city of Varanasi, the air fills with the soulful melodies of Indian classical music, drawing you towards the majestic Sankat Mochan Temple. Here, amidst the backdrop of devotion, unfolds the magic of the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh – a music festival unlike any other.

What began a century ago as a gathering of musician friends has blossomed into one of North India's most celebrated music festivals. Over six nights, witness nearly 60 artists from across the country paying a divine ode to Lord Hanuman. As Lord Rama's greatest devotee, he is worshipped here as Baba Sankat Mochan, the remover of obstacles, and is revered for his knowledge, virtue, and musical prowess by musicians and art lovers alike.

Held annually in April around Hanuman Jayanti, the event becomes truly exceptional for two reasons: it takes place in a temple, and artists from diverse Indian classical disciplines offer captivating performances, all free of charge for the audience to enjoy! Prepare for a revitalising odyssey of the mind and body as the melodies echo through the temple, to give you a soul-stirring experience.

Feel the magic in a spiritual setting

The Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh isn't just a music festival, it's a pilgrimage for music and dance aficionados. In this magical event, there are no visitor passes or VIP areas - everyone is warmly embraced and invited to partake in the festivities.

The event starts at 7:30 pm and stretches into the early morning, transporting you on a captivating journey of Indian classical music. Unwind and truly be present as mobile phones are banned in the temple, creating a distraction-free zone. When you need a break, grab some delicious local sweets such as warm pedas and laddoos from the famous prasad shop.

Step into the courtyard and witness the crowd of spectators, each person respectfully maintaining a discreet distance from the performers. As the music washes over you, keep an eye out for the friendly "uncle" at the water point. He hums and sings as he offers cool water to thirsty music lovers and devotees, adding a touch of heartwarming charm to the experience.

Dive into its exuberant past

The legacy of the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh dates back to 1923, offering a journey through time and tradition. The event started as a one-day event organised by local musicians, including pakhawaj player Pt Amar Nath Mishra. Soon, renowned artists like Pt Maniram (guru to the legendary Pt Jasraj) were invited by Mahant Veerbhadra Mishra, transforming the festival into a national attraction.

What started as a single evening transformed into two, then three, and finally, the grand six-night spectacle you see today. From a brief performance to an all-encompassing celebration, stretching late into the night, the event’s popularity has touched new heights.

While the concerts, called ‘haazri’ (offerings), were once held directly before the idol of Hanuman, they now take place near his enclosure. Screens relay the performances to various locations within and outside the temple, ensuring everyone can partake in the musical journey.

Initially featuring only male musicians, it embraced female performers in the late 1960s. Witness the legacy of Kankana Bannerji, who paved the way for generations of women artists. Today, the festival welcomes Sufi singers and Carnatic musicians, creating a vibrant multi-genre symphony.

So, this year, become part of this historic tradition. Immerse yourself in the melodies that celebrate devotion, artistry, and the timeless spirit of music, for a truly unforgettable experience.
