On this day, the entire nation commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950 as the cornerstone of an independent, sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic with a parliamentary system of government.

The day begins with the country paying homage to the country's heroes and warriors as the ceremonial events commence with the Prime Minister's visit to the National War Memorial, to pay tribute to war heroes. The unfurling of the National Flag, accompanied by the national anthem and a 21-gun salute, sets the stage for the parade. Helicopters shower flower petals on the enthusiastic audience. An awe-inspiring cultural extravaganza

Beyond its display of military might, the Republic Day parade is a true reflection of India's unity in diversity. Cultural performances and dances add a myriad of colours to the parade. Tableaus representing diverse states and union territories of India, and even a range of government departments showcase the distinct cultural spirit and ethos from each region. States vie with each other for top honours with each display being better than the other. In 2023, among the highlights of the cultural performances at the parade was the Vande Bharatam programme in which nearly 500 artists selected in a nationwide competition enthralled the audience with an energetic and spirited dance on the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ theme.

The thrilling motorcycle acrobatics by Corps of Signals' Dare Devils team is always a much awaited act at the parade. Featuring heart-stopping formations like the human pyramid and the lotus formation, the daredevilry on motorcycles in motion is a true showstopper. The grand finale, the Fly Past, is a breath-taking air show by the Indian Air Force, leaving spectators in awe.

Beating the Retreat ceremony

Beating the Retreat ceremony marks the culmination of the Republic Day celebrations. The august ceremony held at Vijay Chowk in Delhi on January 29 every year, has emerged as an event of national pride. It is presided over by the President of India and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, who arrives in a cavalry unit escorted by the 'President's Bodyguards.' The impressive ceremony includes a national salute, the unfurling of the national flag to the tune of the national anthem, and performances by military bands, comprising a variety of buglers, trumpeters, drummers and more. ‘Beating the Retreat’ is a centuries-old military tradition dating from the days when troops disengaged from battle at sunset. As soon as the buglers sounded the retreat, the troops ceased fighting, sheathed their arms and withdrew from the battlefield. It is for this reason that the custom of standing still during the sounding of retreat has been retained to this day. Colours and standards are cased, and flags lowered at retreat.

For the first time in 2023, Indian tunes based on classical ragas were played at the ceremony and a massive Drone Show comprising of 3,500 indigenous drones captivated spectators along with a 3-D anamorphic projection on the façade of the North and South Block.
