Honouring Sikkim's heritage
Originally known as the Sikkim Winter Carnival, this festival underwent a transformation in 2016 to pay homage to the state's beloved mascot, the Red Panda. The primary objective, however, remained the same: to promote tourism in Sikkim during the off-peak winter season. This change of name not only aligns the festival with the state's unique identity but also reinforces its commitment to conserving the Red Panda, an endangered species that symbolises the region's biodiversity.
Thrills, culture, and cuisine
The Red Panda Winter Carnival kicks off with a mesmerising cultural parade led by none other than the festival mascot, the Red Panda itself. This captivating procession showcases participants adorned in traditional attire, swaying to the rhythm of eclectic drumbeats. Following this grand opening, a nine-day itinerary of cultural programs, adventure sports competitions, photography contests, and handicraft exhibits unfolds.
One of the festival's standout features is the diverse array of activities it offers. Adventure seekers can revel in thrilling experiences like trekking, mountain biking, river rafting, and paragliding, all available at promotional prices during the festival. The event also boasts a lavish food festival that indulges the taste buds with authentic Sikkimese cuisine, including delectable dishes from Lepchas, Nepalis, Bhutias, and more.
