Triumph of virtue: The legend of Goddess Durga and Mahishasura
Mysuru Dasara is celebrated to commemorate the defeat of Mahishasura, a buffalo demon king who ruled tyrannically and waged wars against the gods. The divine synergy of the gods gave rise to Goddess Durga, who, after a fierce nine-night battle, emerged victorious over the demon on the tenth day, known as Vijayadashmi.
The term 'Mysuru' itself is linked to the legend of Mahishasura. The place where this epic confrontation took place is believed to be the iconic Chamundi Hills of Mysuru. Legend has it that the Goddess, having triumphed over Mahishasura, stayed on in the form of Chamundi Devi. A temple dedicated to her now stands atop the Chamundi Hills, overlooking the city of Mysuru.
Mysuru Dasara is a celebration deeply entrenched in history and culture. This grand event signifies not only the triumph of good over evil but also showcases the heritage of Mysuru. It is a festival of mythological importance as it commemorates the epic battle between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. Even today, a statue of the fierce Mahishasura stands near the Chamundi Devi temple on the Chamundi Hills, holding a naked sword and a snake.
