An ode to tradition
The Bishnupur Gharana of Hindustani classical music traces its roots back to the 13th century, emerging from the illustrious Dhrupad tradition. Bishnupur has been the cultural jewel of Eastern India. It was in this historic land that the Bishnupur Gharana flourished, becoming the sole vocal gharana of West Bengal. Its popularity soared, thanks in no small part to Bahadur Khan, an accomplished musician and descendant of the legendary Tansen. Fleeing the court of Aurangzeb, Khan found refuge in Bishnupur, already renowned for its artistic patronage. Under the patronage of King Raghunath Singh Deo II, Khan thrived, nurturing a generation of disciples who would carry forward the gharana's legacy.
A melodic canvas of the finest artists
Today, the Bishnupur Music Festival, organised by the West Bengal Tourism Department, pays homage to these pioneering musicians, ensuring that the rich cultural heritage lives on. On par with iconic festivals like the Khajuraho or Konark Dance Festivals in terms of popularity and reach, this festival becomes a melodic canvas that draws the finest names in contemporary Hindustani classical music. Renowned vocalists and instrumentalists grace the stage, creating an enchanting atmosphere that resonates through the very soul of Bishnupur.
