Legends of mystery and wonder
The Zampa Gateway not only holds historical value, but is also shrouded in mystery and allure. Constructed using locally available materials and traditional construction techniques, its distinctive personality adds both cultural significance and appeal.
Legend has it that a Brahmin priest cursed the gateway in protest of Portuguese control of the area and it claimed lives of soldiers who attempted to gain entry through it during the 16th century. Another folklore tells us that Khwaja Syed Fakhruddin constructed it all in one night using magic from genies! Yet another tells us that during the Portuguese administration, the entrance was used for public executions. The ghosts of those who were executed are believed to haunt the gateway. Additionally, during the siege of Diu, the Portuguese soldiers were low on ammunition and filled the canons with gold coins instead. After the siege, the locals found the coins near the gateway. Whatever legend you hear, it’s sure to entice you visiting this centuries old monument!
