A natural marvel

Imagine yourself in the serene forests of Chhattisgarh, standing before the magnificent Chitrakote Waterfalls, often referred to as the 'Niagara Falls of India' for its horseshoe shape, resembling horse feet.

Located 38 kilometres from Jagdalpur in the Bastar district, it is believed that this stunning waterfall was named so because the area around Chitrakote Waterfalls was once home to herds of deer ('chitar' means deer in Halbi).

Stretching nearly 300 metres (980 ft.) during the monsoon season, this is the state’s largest, most water-logged and India’s widest waterfall. One of its unique features is that during the rainy season, the water takes on a reddish hue, while in the summer moonlight, it looks absolutely white.

Whether you're seeking a thrilling adventure or a peaceful retreat, Chitrakote Waterfalls offers a unique and captivating journey that every traveller will cherish.

Witness the roar of Chitrakote Waterfalls

Get ready to be amazed! Deep in the jungle near Jagdalpur, the Indravati River winds its way through the thick trees. But hold on tight, because this river isn't content with just flowing along. It takes a heart-stopping 30-metre (98 ft.) plunge, creating a giant, curved waterfall. Picture a miniature Niagara Falls hidden away in this wild place in India. The water crashes down with incredible force, spraying mist everywhere and making the earth shake. Chitrakote Waterfalls is a sight that will leave you spellbound!

Ever-changing beauty, year-round wonder

Chitrakote Waterfalls, a dynamic natural marvel, offers a mesmerising experience that varies with the seasons, making it a delightful destination throughout the year. The waterfall features at least three and up to seven streams cascading down its rocky ledges on different occasions, creating a spectacle that never fails to enchant visitors.

During the monsoon season, from July to October, Chitrakote Waterfalls is at its most magnificent. The river swells, and the waterfall expands to its full width, showcasing the sheer power and volume of water. The surrounding landscape transforms into a lush green paradise, enhancing the beauty of the falls, and if you're lucky, you'll catch rainbows forming as the sun's rays reflect off the mist from the falls.

As the monsoon transitions to the dry season, the flow of water gradually decreases, revealing the rocky ledges and formations beneath the falls. Despite the reduced water flow, Chitrakote Waterfalls retains its charm, with multiple streams gently trickling down the cliffs. This quiet setting offers a perfect retreat for those seeking peace and tranquillity amidst nature's beauty.
