A journey through myth and majesty

Historical roots

Ratanpur’s roots run deep into antiquity. Referred to as “Ratanpura” in ancient inscriptions, this town boasts a lineage that spans epochs. During the medieval era, Ratanpur gained prominence as the capital of the Kalchuri dynasty. King Ratnadeva I, recognizing its strategic location, shifted his seat of power here. The town came to be known as “Chaturyugi Nagari” signifying its existence across four eras.

Mahabharata

According to legend, during the Treta Yuga, tears shed by Sati Parvati (after Lord Shiva killed her husband Kapardidev) formed the Kajal Talab (Kohl Pond) in Ratanpur.

Ratanpur is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Rama’s mother, Queen Kaushalya.

Mahamaya Devi Temple

The temple’s origin story involves King Ratansen’s vision of the goddess Mahamaya, who instructed him to build a temple where her idol was discovered. This 11th century temple is a spiritual beacon for the faithful.
