Pinda Daan

When you think of hill stations in India, visions of the mighty Himalayas or the verdant Uttarakhand hills often come to mind. But what if we tell you that the state of Bihar, known for its rich cultural heritage, also harbours a lesser-known hill station that will transport you to a realm where mythology and spirituality intertwine? Prepare to be captivated by the sacred eminence of Ramshila Hill, a hidden jewel nestled in the heart of Gaya.

Amidst the verdant hallowed land, where the ancient echoes of mythology resonate through every whisper of the wind, Ramshila Hill beckons with the promise of an odyssey that transcends the bounds of the temporal realm. For it is believed that upon these sanctified slopes, Lord Rama himself is said to have offered the sacred Pinda Daan (an ancient rite performed for the departed souls of your ancestors), forever etching the hill's name into the annals of devotion.

An age-old temple and traditions

As you ascend the winding paths of Ramshila Hill, you'll notice ancient stone sculptures dotting the hillside, hinting at the sacred structures that once graced these slopes centuries ago.

Crowning the summit, you arrive at the temple, which has stood the test of time since its original construction, believed to date back to 1014 AD. While it has undergone renovations over the years, the temple exudes an aura of timeless reverence. Inside, you'll find idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshmana, their serene presence inviting devotees for spiritual contemplation.

Just before the main temple, a pavilion built in 1811 serves as a gathering place for Hindu devotees during the Pitrapaksh (a time period dedicated to ancestors in the Hindu calendar), when they offer sacred Pinda Daan in honour of their ancestors. Within the temple complex, you'll also discover a three-hundred-year-old Shiva temple, housing a foot-tall Shivling carved from rare rock crystal and a five-foot idol of Lord Ganesha.

Soak in the serenity of the landscape and spiritual ambience of this hidden gem, where nature, mythology and devotion intertwine, creating an experience that will leave you enchanted.
