A history of awe and reverie

Come and learn more about the history of the illustrious Muga silk saree in India which is deeply intertwined with the cultural and economic tapestry of the state of Assam. Muga silk, known for its beautiful sheen and naturally golden tone, has been a treasured material for centuries.

As is the case with a lot of traditional arts and crafts in country like India, the exact origins of Muga silk production remains unknown. However, the production and use of Muga silk has been documented as far back as between the fourth and third centuries BCE by the philosopher and royal advisor, Kautiliya. That is over two millennia ago! Its upgradation to luxury and exclusivity status happened under the Ahom dynasty of Assam in the 13th century. It was reserved primarily for royalty, high-ranking officials, and aristocrats.

The Ahom ruler’s encouragement and patronage to the Muga Silk industry paved the way for Muga silk spinning and weaving to become a household indispensable profession in Assam. Muga silk weaving was traditionally a family-run business that was carried on through the generations. Even now, there are several meticulous manual steps in the process that call for trained artisans.

Muga silk: Beyond fabric

Muga silk is more than just a fabric; it represents Assamese culture. Given the exclusivity attached with wearing a muga silk saree, it is not a part of Assamese festivals and weddings with the elaborate motifs and its trademark golden sheen.

For connoisseurs of rich culture and heritage, it is pertinent to enjoy the feel of the drape of a Muga silk saree!
