Meet the stars of the sanctuary
Witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural environment is a truly unforgettable experience that will etch itself into your memory for years to come. Imagine the graceful movements of wild elephants, the serene sight of Asiatic buffaloes peacefully grazing, and the elusive presence of leopards and wild boars stealthily traversing through the dense foliage. Yet, it is the Indian one-horned rhinoceros that truly commands attention, reigning as the undisputed star of Pobitora's captivating landscape.
Turning the pages of history
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to the poignant tale of the daughter of the King of Mayong, who passed away in her youth. This sanctuary was named after his daughter, Pobitora.
Once a dense marshland enveloped by sprawling paddy fields and farmland, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary was meticulously tended to by local villagers. Their steadfast dedication ensured the protection of the sanctuary from encroaching outsiders, as well as safeguarding its inhabitants, including rhinoceros, cattle, and wild bulls.
In a pivotal moment of recognition, the Government of Assam Tourism bestowed official approval upon Pobitora in 1971, designating it as a reserved wooded area. This decision cemented the sanctuary's status as a haven for wildlife conservation, ensuring its preservation for present and future generations to cherish and enjoy.
