Encounter exotic creatures in Guwahati’s wild

In the verdant embrace of Guwahati's lush landscape lies a sanctuary of untamed beauty and boundless biodiversity—a place where the rhythms of nature dance in harmony and the echoes of the wild reverberate through the air.

Welcome to the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary, a natural paradise where ancient forests teem with life, where majestic rivers meander through verdant valleys, and where elusive creatures roam freely beneath the emerald canopies.

Spanning over 78 sq km of land, the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary is a veritable treasure trove of ecological wonders, boasting a rich tapestry of flora and fauna that captivates the heart and the mind. From flying foxes to slow lorises, and the elusive presence of leopards, every encounter is a brush with the wild. Keep your eyes peeled for exotic bird species like the Khaleej Pheasant Green Imperial Pigeon, whose vibrant plumage against the bright skies will enchant you. You will also discover over 750 species of butterflies and 360 species of moths flitting about and adding a kaleidoscope of colours to the sanctuary's natural canvas.

But amidst its natural splendour, the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary serves a greater purpose—a sanctuary of conservation and preservation, dedicated to safeguarding the delicate balance of ecosystems and protecting endangered species for generations to come. Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary was also recognised as an Important Bird & Biodiversity Area.

The deeper you go, the more you discover

Among the ancient trees and verdant foliage, you may find yourself face to face with rhesus macaques, their mischievous antics adding a touch of whimsy to your journey. Look up into the canopy, and you might spot the elegant, capped langurs, their graceful movements a testament to the beauty of the natural world.

But the wonders of Amchang extend far beyond its primate residents. Venture further into the wilderness, and you may encounter the regal jungle cats, their golden eyes gleaming with primal wisdom. Keep your senses sharp, for wild pigs, sambars, barking deer, and mighty gaurs may cross your path, each one a living testament to the sanctuary's rich biodiversity.

Yet, it is the elusive predators that truly capture the imagination. With luck on your side, you may catch a fleeting glimpse of the elusive leopard, its spotted coat blending seamlessly with the dappled shadows of the forest floor. Or perhaps you'll stumble upon the sinuous form of a python, coiled in silent repose, its presence adding a sense of intrigue to your wilderness adventure.

As you meander through the sanctuary's winding trails, don't forget to cast your gaze skyward, where slender-billed vultures and lesser-pied hornbills soar majestically overhead. These avian marvels are but a small sampling of the diverse birdlife that inhabits Amchang, each one a testament to the sanctuary's status as a sanctuary of avian diversity.

Home to 90 majestic elephants

The Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to nearly 90 wild elephants. Recognising the importance of preserving their natural habitat, the Indian Army has taken on the role of protecting these majestic beasts. The Narengi Military Station, located close to the sanctuary, allows for occasional visits from the wild elephants.

But the Army's commitment to the well-being of these majestic beasts extends far beyond mere protection. Recognizing the importance of ensuring their holistic welfare, they have embarked upon a noble mission to provide for their every need. From constructing ponds to quench their thirst on sweltering summer days to planting fruit trees and lush grasslands to nourish their bodies, every measure has been taken to ensure their health and happiness.

Yet, perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this relationship is the profound sense of mutual respect and coexistence that exists between man and beast. Witnessing the harmonious interaction between the Indian Army and the wild elephants is a sight to behold, a testament to the power of compassion and understanding in forging bonds that transcend species boundaries.

As you wander through Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary's pathways, discover a place where nature reigns supreme and every creature finds a home. If you’re visiting Guwahati, make this sanctuary a must-visit on your itinerary, and prepare to behold amazing sights and unforgettable adventures!
