A holy cradle of spirituality

The Urgelling Monastery is a small Gompa in Tawang with a fascinating history waiting to be explored. Nestled just 3 kilometres from the lively Tawang township, the path to this gompa feels like a hidden secret waiting to be uncovered. As you make your way, you'll be greeted by lush green valleys adorned with wildflowers, all under a vast canvas of clear blue skies. Colourful prayer flags flutter gently in the crisp mountain air, carrying whispers of ancient prayers.

Upon reaching the monastery, a deep sense of peace will wash over you, creating a tranquil atmosphere that resonates throughout this sacred space. Built in 1487 AD, the very stones of this monastery whisper tales of the past. Its founding dates back to the 15th century and is attributed to the revered Lama Urgen Sangpo, lending it an air of antiquity and mystique. The captivating story of Tsangyang Gyatso, the enigmatic 6th Dalai Lama, is also widespread, as the legend says he was born and spent his formative years here, infusing the monastery with a profound sense of reverence.

The imprints of greatness

Urgelling Monastery, though smaller than its illustrious neighbour, the Tawang Monastery, holds an undeniable charm. The monastery itself is a treasure trove of cultural heritage. It houses the hand-painted portraits of all the Dalai Lamas and sacred imprints believed to be left by the Sixth Dalai Lama himself. The main prayer hall, adorned with vibrant thangka paintings and flickering butter lamps, serves as the heart of the monastery, where monks and visitors alike gather to offer their prayers and meditations.
