Bong bong beautiful

Nuranang Falls, also known as Jang Falls and locally referred to as Bong Bong Falls, is a breathtaking 100-meter-high waterfall situated 2 kilometres northeast of Jang town in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. This stunning natural wonder is conveniently located on the motorable Jang Falls Road, nestled between Tawang and Bomdila on the NH-13 Trans-Arunachal Highway, just north of the Sela Tunnel.

A girl’s bravery

The waterfall is not only a marvel of nature but also a site of historical significance. The Nuranang River, which feeds the waterfall, originates from the northern slopes of the Sela Pass and joins the Tawang River shortly after the cascade.

The name Nuranang is derived from a poignant local legend involving a Monpa girl named Nura, who played a heroic role in the 1962 Sino-Indian War by assisting Indian Army Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat. Her bravery is commemorated in the naming of the river and the falls, adding a layer of cultural depth to its stunning natural beauty.

Experiencing Nuranang Falls

Visitors to Nuranang Falls are treated to a variety of engaging activities in a setting that combines natural splendour with heroic history. The area is perfect for picnicking amidst views of the thunderous waterfall and its lush surroundings. Adventurous souls can explore the nearby hiking trails or trek down to the base of the falls for a closer experience of its might. The vicinity also hosts the Jang Hydal Plant, a small hydroelectric facility that underscores the region's blend of natural resources and sustainable practices.

Nuranang Falls is more than just a natural wonder; it is a place where beauty, history, and heroism intertwine. Whether you are an avid trekker, a history enthusiast, or a lover of serene landscapes, Nuranang Falls promises a visit that is both awe-inspiring and educational.

Exploring beyond the waterfall

The strategic location of Nuranang Falls on the Trans-Arunachal Highway makes it an excellent starting point for further exploration. The historic Tawang Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India, is located just 40 kms away, offering spiritual and architectural insights. The Tawang War Memorial, dedicated to the martyrs of the Sino-Indian War, is another poignant site nearby that provides a historical context to the area’s recent past.
