The spiritual abode of Tawang Monastery

The Statue is situated near the Tawang Monastery, India’s largest Buddhist monastery founded by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in 1680-1681, as per the wishes of Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, The 5th Dalai Lama. Tawang monastery is known as  Tawang Galden Namgye Lhatse in Tibet which translates to “the site chosen by the horse is the divine paradise of complete victory”. You will be astonished to learn the legendary tales surrounding its name.

There are 3 tales surrounding the origin of the name, in the First tale, Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso was on a journey, seeking the perfect spot for the monastery when he lost his horse. He searched tirelessly until he found it grazing atop a hill called Tana Mandekhang. Taking this as a sign, he chose this location.

In the second tale, it is believed Terton Pemalingpa had stated to give initiations of Tamdin and Kagyad, leading to Tawang where ‘Ta’ was taken from Tamdin and ‘Wang’ means initiation.

In the third tale, The Prince of Lhasa’s horse had wandered off, people began looking for it and found it grazing at the present place of the monastery. They started worshipping the horse and the spot, making it a sacred site. To honour the spot, the Tawang Monastery was built there.

Tawang Monastery belongs to the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and has immense significance among followers of Buddhism across the world. Followers pay homage and perform pilgrimages at this auspicious and sacred site of devotion. The monastery is a spiritual abode for those seeking solace and tranquillity. Home to renowned scriptures, primitive manuscripts and thangkas, these artefacts not only serve as sources of insights but also as testaments to the rich cultural background of the place. Symbolic representation of Buddha’s enlightenment

Gautam Buddha is depicted in a meditating position called Dhyana Mudra and a gesture called Bhumisparsha Mudra. The Buddha is seated in Padmasana (lotus position), a crossed position in which the Right foot rests on top of the left thigh, and the left foot rests on top of the right thigh. This seating position has originated from ancient  Indian meditation practises. Buddha’s hand gesture is also called “Calling the Earth to Witness Mudra”.In this mudra, the left hand rests palm-up in the lap, and the right hand touches the earth depicting the moment he gained enlightenment and summoned the Earth Goddess to witness his victory over Mara (temptations). In-depth spiritual significance is depicted by this particular pose and position, inspiring us through  Buddha’s enlightenment journey. The Statue displays solitude and seclusion, encouraging us onto the path of peace and sacred awakening.
