A spiritual exquisite

Itanagar, located at the foothills of the majestic Himalayas, the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh is truly a treasure trove. This city bundles itself in the picturesque beauty of nature, rich culture and warm hospitality. There is so much that this city offers you from the inimitable culture and friendly locals to lush green landscapes and rivers and hills. Surrounded by the Himalayas and the river Brahmaputra you will find that peace has entrapped you. This place is also a paradise for religious people. You will face calmness from all the churches this place boasts about. One such exquisite place near Itanagar is Nirjuli town. 33 km away from Itanagar, located in the Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh is the Nirjuli town Baptist church.

The symphony Of chants and serenity

Signifying “God’s light”, the word ‘Nirjuli’ is a combination of ‘Itanagar’ and ‘Nirjuli’. Symbolising the omnipresence of the Divine in the region, this place was named as such to remind all the local people that the god's light will always illuminate their path towards righteousness. The local Baptists who founded this church wanted a place that could teach the people unity and spiritual guidance and now the people here are united by love, peace and understanding. The chants of prayer and worshipful singing will calm your soul and cleanse your every being. If you wish to assimilate yourself with Christianity, the church provides bible studies, and fellowship gatherings to promote communication and unity as well as retreats. The church also promises to empower individuals to improve their lives and contribute to society and for this, they provide Sunday schools, literacy classes and vocational training.

The gothic architecture

The front of the church is simple yet elegant with just a cross atop the structure, signifying the church's Christian identity. As you step into the church, you see a well-lit interior with a high ceiling and walls adorned with verses from the bible, inspirational quotes and local artwork and crafts from that area. A wooden cross stands on the altar and beneath it are the chairs arranged neatly for you to sit upon. There's also a baptismal pool here, which washes away your sins and frees you from the shackles of your past. This church also features pointed arches that draw your gaze naturally towards the divine and ribbed vaults that, alongside providing structural support, also add delightfulness to the church.

The church, given its Gothic architecture, also has stained glass windows. One such window of the church is a beautiful rose-stained glass window that is intricately designed and showcases you in all its glory the many petals of a rose flower. This rose window is believed to represent the divine light and eternity of the church. The interplay of light and colour as sunshine passes through these stained windows lights up not only the church but also your senses with vibrant hues. In Christianity, this window is said to represent Christ's radiance and the god's love

The local legends of that time

According to the local folklore, people at that time believed that the church was built where once a divine light had appeared and that this light had been a guide to the people who were lost and finding solace. The pilgrims today, too, still believe that the divine light of the church will lead them towards hope and peace.

It is also said that a guardian spirit resided over this church, which would protect the church in the monsoon season from thundering storms and rain, stopping the church from stumbling over.

The church also boasts about its healing water, situated near the church is a natural spring that is said to have natural healing properties. Legends also stated how as you bathe in the spring, you are washed clean of your illnesses and achieve miraculous recovery.

Another lesser-known local tale tells about a stormy night when the bell went missing from this church, which is said to have been taken by the divine to protect the church from further harm.

There's yet another tale that intrigues your heart to no end. The legend stated that an angel with a glowing aura had revealed to a devout priest in his dreams the location of a hidden treasure chest with gems and hidden scriptures. Along with the whispers of hidden treasure buried under the church's foundation that grew so did the curious souls that wanted to be the first to uncover this mystical chest.
