The heart of history, heritage and legacy

Located in the heart of Arunachal Pradesh, the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum is the pride of the city of Itanagar. Set up in the loving and dear memory of India's first-ever prime minister, this museum was especially taken care of under the chairmanship of Sri R D Pradhan, the governor and vice chairmanship of Sri Gegong Apang, and was shifted from the central museum of Shillong on 15 January 1990. The museum is an ethnographic and archaeological museum epitome, making it perfectly exciting to understand the cultural and historical significance of the state and the city.

A walk back in time

With two capacious floors, the museum is beautifully adorned with artefacts all around.

The museum offers an insight into the local culture of the state of Arunachal Pradesh with artefacts that range from the history of tribal people, people who live in the Himalayan ranges and many others. The artefacts include Nehruji’s clothes and fabric pieces including shawls, blankets, dupattas and jewellery pieces made specially out of natural and organic materials held from the olden times.

Another thing to look at is the extremely beautiful collection of weapons and tools, made out of stones and scraps which include knives, daggers, bows and arrows with their extremely good functionality. Special mention goes to the musical instruments of the people of the state including flutes, sitars, drums and many more.

The special craft of wooden carvings takes one's heart away with wooden panels, masks and other artefacts. Also on display are the religious vessels and products used for worship.

A floor filled with archaeological finds also takes your breath away with age-old pottery shards and stone tools that show the reform of tools and pottery over time. There are findings from Ita Fort as well, and from Noksparbat and Malinithan in the West Siang district which include tools, pots, religious objects, clothes and much more. Thereby making it one of the best and the oldest museums in the north-east.

Beyond the museum

With spending your time learning about the archaeological artefacts you can visit the actual sites which lie nearby, like the triangular-shaped Ita Fort, whose name comes from bricks (ita) and is a lasting impression of Chutia Dynasty's rule from 14th to 15th century AD.

Another place to visit nearby is the Buddhist temple Gompa a monastery set at walking distance from the museum on a hill top giving you the highlight of the place where the Buddhist monks attain enlightenment and a serene view of the valley that truly mesmerises the heart and soul of the viewer.

Gyakar Sinyi aka the Ganga Lake is a little far away but serves as a great site to spend the evening. You can look at the artefacts of the museum and spend some quality time at Ita Fort. The River offers a great view with lush greenery all around, truly connecting all the aspects around and binding them together in a beautiful way.
