The guardian of an ancient kingdom

Situated in the heart of Itanagar, the majestic Ita Fort invites you to embark on a journey through time, where tales of bygone eras and architectural brilliance intertwine. Its name, derived from the term 'Ita' for bricks, hints at the fort's formidable construction, a marvel of ancient engineering and craftsmanship.

Dating back to the 14th or 15th century, this "Fort of Bricks" stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the Chutiya dynasty, which erected its walls with meticulous precision. As you wander amidst its sprawling fortifications, the irregular shape of the fort casts a spell of enchantment, drawing travellers from distant lands to behold its majesty.

For centuries, Ita Fort has served as a mighty guardian, protecting the land and its people within its sturdy walls. From its towering ramparts, adorned with three magnificent gates at its western, eastern, and southern flanks, each gate exudes its own unique allure, inviting you to uncover the mysteries that lie beyond.

Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking to immerse yourself in the timeless charm of Itanagar, a visit to Ita Fort promises an unforgettable experience.

An impressive defence layout

As you venture into the fort, you will be amazed at how impressive its layout is. The eastern rampart stretches for over half a kilometre and boasts a single gate, while the western rampart extends over 1.4 kilometres with two gates. The eastern gate, overlooking Doimukh in Dikrang Valley, was built with stone masonry, while the southern gate was constructed with brick and stone slabs. The ancient craftsmanship reflected in the bricks will surely amaze you. Although the intricate floral and animated designs that once adorned the gates have since disappeared, they once added to the fort's charm.

You can imagine the historical ambience as you pass through these gates that had once acted as vital checkpoints against potential threats from Gohpur and Ramghat in the south. However, the grandest of all the gateways is the main entrance or the western gate, which faces the river Senkhi. As you explore further, marvel at the irregular, steep ridges that stretch over a kilometre and form natural defences – a sight that will leave you in awe.

Of jaw dropping numbers

Did you know that the construction of the fort took 80 lakh bricks across a staggering brickwork of 16,200 cubic metres? An even more astonishing fact is that 45,000 man-days were invested in its construction! You cannot help but admire the skill and dedication of the artisans and workers who built this masterpiece.

The origins of Ita Fort have intrigued scholars and historians alike and will deepen your fascination with the fort too. While traditionally credited to King Ramachandra of the Jitari Dynasty, who oversaw its construction between 1350 and 1450 A.D., a more recent perspective suggests it may have been erected in 1688 A.D. by the Ahom king, Chakradhvaj Simha.

Today, as travellers walk amidst the ancient bricks of Ita Fort, it paints a vivid picture of Arunachal Pradesh and Itanagar’s vibrant past. So, make it a must-visit destination during your stay in Itanagar, for a truly memorable experience!
