A voyage into an illustrious past

A trip to a museum always turns out to be a visually and intellectually enriching experience. The Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Museum, more popularly known as the Visakha Museum, is a fine example of the same. Standing as an incredible repository of history and culture since its inception in 1991, this incredible institution has become a beloved spot both for tourists and locals alike. Once a ruined Dutch bungalow on the beach road, it was renovated and turned into a Museum that took upon itself the huge task of preserving the great history of the city. Housed within its walls lies an abundance of ancient artefacts, rare manuscripts, intricate sculptures, breathtaking works of art as well as coins and pottery that offer visitors an immersive look into Kalingandhara (North Andhra) region's rich heritage.

Where history comes alive

As you enter this incredible repository, it will take you on an immersive journey through time. A veritable treasure chest of historical importance, this unique haven of ancient artefacts exhibits the rich cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh from prehistoric to modern times. Be amazed at its astounding displays ranging from ancient armoury, delicate coins, exquisite silk costumes and stunning jewellery pieces to captivating periodicals, maps, and scrapbooks. Each exhibit tells a story of their role and significance in building a golden era.

This museum also celebrates the Indian Naval Force through a section dedicated to the history of both the Indian Navy and Eastern Naval Command. Here you’ll get to learn everything from tales of heroism to incredible equipment used by these guardians of the seas. Marvel at the tasteful displays of warships, missiles and artillery that defended the country in times of conflict.

The museum also houses a rare exhibit that deserves your special attention. A searchlight reflector from Vasco da Gama's maiden sea voyage. You may even draw inspiration from famous words of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's in majestic display saying “ To be secure on land, we must be supreme on the sea”.
