Locals believe that during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971, Admiral Krishnan of the Eastern Naval Command showed his gratitude by breaking 1001 coconuts before Lord Ganesh at this temple for having protected Vizag from being attacked by enemies and sparing the city from harm. Students frequently place their exam hall tickets before Lord Vinayaka in this shrine for blessings for success; making this shrine an auspicious starting place for young minds.

Sampath Vinayagar Temple is famous for its vehicle puja ceremony. On Sundays and Mondays, new vehicles line up outside the temple seeking blessings for an auspicious journey.
