Embroidering the past

In the temple town of Venkatagiri, that peacefully exists at the borders of Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore and Tirupati district, a community of weavers go on about their work the same way every day. They prepare rolls and rolls of spun cotton/silk yarns; some prepare dyes and bind a lasting tint to the threads; a portion of weavers wind the yarn into warps and wefts; and others work at the mills, interlacing threads – weaving. What results from these daily rigours is yards of fabric that are an indelible part of Andhra Pradesh's weaving heritage, exuding grace and timeless elegance. The handwoven Venkatagiri Sarees are admired for their ageless beauty – its creators respected around the globe for their talent of creating the finest fabrics.

The weaving process

It is said that the Venkatagiri weaving first originated over 300 years ago, during the reign of the Velugoti dynasty. The weavers enjoyed the patronage of the then royalty which sought dhotis and turbans woven from soft silk, featuring sophisticated embroidery. A small group of about 40 weavers were thus, supported by the royal family for this exclusive purpose. As time went by, queens and other women of the royal family too began adorning themselves with the Venkatagiri fabrics that had now taken the form of sarees. Today, in a town of 40,000 people, 20,000 are weavers still engaged in this tradition of handloom.

Venkatagiri sarees are famous for the beautiful gold and silver zari designs embellished across its fabrics. A zari border also decorates the border and pallu of the saree in the form of a bold ribbon. This zari is especially sourced from Gujarat. You only need to think of a colour to find a Venkatagiri saree in the desired shade – such is the range of bold as well as pastel tones that the sarees are dyed in. Even the quality of water of the region contributes in the manner colour binds to the fabric.

Venkatagiri sarees stand apart for their intricate craftsmanship. Weavers use the Jamdani technique, weaving patterns directly into fabric using intricate buti designs for producing a classic, chic aesthetic. Other popular patterns created from gold/silver zari include the swan, gold coin, mango, leaf and flower. Geometric motifs too find their way in Venkatagiri sarees. These detailed motifs are a prime contributor to the artfully crafted Venkatagiri masterpieces. Each saree personifies the skill of the artisans, their dedication and their love for this craft.

A versatile choice

Venkatagiri sarees are beloved pieces of Andhra Pradesh culture that can fit seamlessly into traditional ceremonies as well as formal events. From formal meetings to weddings and more casual affairs, these timeless garments helps the wearer make an impressionable statement about themselves. The light, breathable fabric is comfortable on the skin even during Andhra's scorching summer heat. With many vibrant colours to choose from, its proven durability and affordable prices, Venkatagiri sarees make for truly versatile souvenirs from Andhra Pradesh that will last generations! So what reason does one have to deny themselves this resilient beauty?
