An abode of divine blessings

Kotappakonda, a sacred hill in Palnadu district, Andhra Pradesh, India, lies Kotappakonda, 62 kilometres southwest of Guntur City. It is a holy hill with three distinct peaks and has been a pilgrimage site for centuries, attracting devotees and nature lovers. The name 'Kotappakonda' translates to 'Hill of Eagles,' in reference to the majestic birds that soar high above. Every year, countless devotees visit Kotappakonda, which has an interesting mythological story associated with it.

The story revolves around Sundudu and Kundiri, a prosperous couple, and their daughter, Anandavalli (Gollabhama), who was devoted to Lord Shiva. Despite facing hardships, her devotion remained unwavering. Impressed by her dedication, Jangama Devara blessed her with a miraculous pregnancy. However, due to a broken promise on her journey home, Jangama Devara transformed into a Lingam at Brahma Hills. This tale unfolds at the renowned New Koteswara Temple, where devotion and divine intervention intertwine.

The three shrines of divinity

Located at an elevation of approximately 1,380 feet above sea level, Kotappakonda offers a panoramic view that stretches as far as the eye can see. You are welcomed by the grandeur of the Kotappakonda Temple, also known as the Trikoteswara Swamy Temple after reaching the summit. Believed to be built during the Satavahana dynasty, the temple complex is adorned with intricate carvings and designs. The main sanctum houses the revered deity, Lord Shiva, known here as Trikoteswara Swamy.

The Old Kotayya Temple on Rudra Shikharam and the Lord Paapanaseswara Temple on Vishnu Shikharam, where it is believed that Lord Vishnu did penance for Lord Shiva to complete the divine trilogy, offer solace and spirituality to those who seek it. Every year a great festival known as Tirunallu is held on the day of Mahashivaratri. Lakhs of people come from several nearby villages. These are decorated with colourful papers and special lighting. On the festival night, cultural activities are held.
